Dre is a NASM Certified Personal Trainer and former D1 football player who specializes in kettlebell functional training and brings his exciting energy to kettlebell workouts. Find out how you can train with Dre and how to get started with Peloton Kettlebell training—the newest addition to Peloton’s Strength repertoire.
Why Train with Kettlebells?
Kettlebells are not only an accessible piece of equipment, but they’re incredibly versatile in the types of training you can do with them. Kettlebells are the third most owned piece of strength equipment in the US, behind dumbbells and resistance bands, reaching 14.5M in 2023. This means, chances are you’ve got kettlebells at home, or can find them at any gym.
You know that strength training is a key part of an overall balanced fitness routine, but kettlebells offer more than incredible strength benefits. You can also use them to work on cardio conditioning and power, which is why Peloton offers four unique kettlebell class types, so you can experience the full range of benefits available to you when you train with kettlebells (more on these class types below!).
“Our kettlebell class offerings are designed to give you a well-rounded training program,” says Peloton Instructor Andy Speer. “The idea is that you can focus on one specific training element—for example adding strength training to your cardio if you’re already focusing on running or riding for cardio. Or adding conditioning classes to your routine if you’re lifting consistently. Of course, the beauty is that you can combine all three class types for a well-rounded training week that hits your conditioning and strength training.”
How to Do Kettlebell Training with Peloton
Ready to reap the benefits that kettlebells offer? You can find kettlebell classes on the Peloton App, led by some of your favorite Peloton Instructors. If you prefer to train at the gym and follow a pre-set workout plan on your own time, you can also dive into kettlebells on the Peloton Strength+ app and follow the two-week Kettlebell training program, The Kettlebell Experience, led by Guest Instructor Dre.
Kettlebell Training on the Peloton App
You can find kettlebell classes on the Peloton App, under the Kettlebells Collection. Each class ranges in focus from Strength to Conditioning, or offers a combo of both. You can also get your feet wet with the Kettlebell Basics classes for a “kettlebells 101” style class that will make sure you’ve got the basics down and nail the core moves before progressing to more advanced classes. You can find the below class types on the App:
Kettlebell Strength: These classes incorporate 80 percent strength moves, and 20 percent ballistic moves (i.e. explosive-type moves) during transitions between heavy lifts and end with a powerful ballistic move finisher. “Kettlebell Strength focuses on traditional grinds, or classic lifts—presses, rows, squats, deadlifts—with the purpose of building strength and adding lean muscle mass. There is a mix of low rep heavy weight training and higher rep training. You’ll experience some cardio effect but the focus of these classes is building strength,” says Andy.
Kettlebell Conditioning: Want to improve your cardiovascular health and functional strength and mobility? These classes include 60 percent ballistic moves, 20 percent bodyweight moves, and 20 percent high rep, low-weight strength to develop muscular endurance. “Your heart rate will spike and sweat will pour as you move through these classes, says Andy. “Conditioning classes focus on ballistic moves–swings, cleans and snatches, combined with body weight moves with the purpose of improving your conditioning and power endurance.”
Kettlebell Strength & Conditioning: Get the best of both formats with this hybrid class, which is a 50/50 split of the two styles of training. “These are great classes to build overall fitness,” says Andy.
Kettlebell Basics: Learn the fundamentals of certain movements or techniques before mastering more advanced formats.

Meet Dre Mayes
As Peloton’s Guest Instructor, Dre knows a thing or two about kettlebells and what they bring to your fitness routine. Want to learn more about Dre and why you should try kettlebells? We sat down with him for a special Q+A so you can get to know him better.
What’s one myth about kettlebell training you want to dispel?
A lot of people think they're for an advanced level, but you can really use them at any level—beginner, intermediate, or advanced. It’s just about learning proper technique and putting the reps in.
How would you describe your coaching style?
I prioritize form and quality of movement above everything. So I don’t really care about how much weight you are lifting or how hard you are going if you’re not lifting with correct form and technique. Go with lighter weight or use less intensity to make sure you’re doing it correctly.
Why do you think people should add kettlebell training to their fitness routines?
You get all in one benefits—it offers strength, conditioning, and there can also be a mobility and flexibility aspect of it. More and more it’s about coordination and understanding your own center of gravity of your body, your core strength. So it kinda forces you to expose weaknesses you didn’t know you had.
Are kettlebells a good place to start if you are new to strength training?
It’s a good place to start because you get the full-body experience. A lot of beginners don’t spend a lot of time at the gym, so being able to work out with one piece of equipment is the perfect start.
How did you get into kettlebell training originally?
I was working with a lot of people that were beginners, or older and limited [in their movement] where they couldn’t work with a barbell or I didn't like certain machines for them, so I started exploring with the kettlebell because it felt like it was more attainable. It allowed me to focus on improving their overall movement.
Ready to try Peloton’s kettlebell workouts? You can find Dre’s kettlebell moves in the Strength+ workout generator, and in the 2-week kettlebell program on the Strength+ App. You can also catch Dre as a special guest alongside Jess Sims in a kettlebell class on the Peloton App.
