Today we’re excited that Peloton Lanebreak, our first gaming-inspired experience, is rolling out to our global community! Designed specifically for the Peloton Bike and Peloton Bike+, Lanebreak combines heart pumping music, immersive visuals and fitness-inspired challenges to push Members to their peak performance. Lanebreak is available to All-Access Members on Bike and Bike+ and is designed to add some variety into your workout routine.

Want to give it a try? Find Lanebreak on your Peloton Bike in the “More Rides” menu on the bottom of the tablet.

What is Lanebreak?

In Lanebreak – players control a wheel-like avatar along a six-lane track. Riders encounter Moments that are placed in time with music and sequenced to create unique, fitness-first workouts.

Members can choose a variety of levels based on different genres of music and workout types. Just like the Peloton library, we plan on keeping the experience fresh and will regularly add more levels. Every level is set to a unique playlist of top tracks (just like our Instructor-led Cycling classes) and is designed to follow the flow of on-screen cues and the goal of the workout. Riders can choose to take any level on Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, or Expert – affecting the resistance ranges of each lane. This helps to ensure that Lanebreak is inclusive to all Members, regardless of where they are in their fitness journey. Between the music genres and the workout intensity, there is something for everyone with Lanebreak.

Instructor Emma Lovewell worked with the team to provide that Instructor perspective: “The way the cues and movement perfectly match the music is one of my favorite aspects of it. It's also a great addition to our instructor-led classes. I know some days you need that butt-kicking inspiration from one of us instructors, and other days you just want to ride to some killer music without an instructor. I get it. Now you can have both! So happy I was able to help participate in the making of this new innovative type of content, I think people are going to love it!”

How does it work?

Lanebreak uses a combination of cadence (speed of pedaling) and resistance (added force needed to pedal) as primary inputs to complete Moments.

The resistance knob is also used to “turn” the avatar left and right to change between the six lanes, and get into the lane with the upcoming Moment. To get further to the right resistance lanes, users need to increase resistance.

Lanebreak levels are made up of three core Moments:

  • BEATS: Blue bars on the track that award points for simply being in the right lane at the right time.

  • BREAKERS: Orange Moments that charge faster by raising your output and award points for completing.

  • STREAMS: Longer green Moments that require you to keep your cadence within the target range to score points.

At certain times in each level, riders will see resistance and cadence cues pop-up on the lanes to the left and right. Similar to the modifications and wide range cues Instructors call out, we gave riders in Lanebreak the option to push themselves or choose the more moderate path. But here’s a pro tip: if you choose the path on the right, you have the ability to earn more points!

Based on the percentage of Moments riders complete by the end of the level, they can earn between zero and three stars. Over the course of the level riders also earn points for completing Moments, adding up to their total score for that level. Bringing together music and gaming-inspired fitness

Lanebreak takes inspiration from Peloton classes, which fuse a deep and diverse music catalog with expert instruction. Members can expect many of the same fitness-first challenges they see in classes (intervals, tabata, climbs, low impact, warm ups). For example, we have a ten minute ride that follows the roadmap of a low-impact cycling class with the resistance and cadence cues similar to what a Peloton Instructor may call out during a low-impact ride.

We also have a number of music inspired levels powered by our launch partner, Warner Music Group. We are excited to see how this new format influences the way that Members perform in class and interact with their favorite artists and songs. We are particularly excited to be launching with our first artist themed levels, David Bowie and David Guetta.

Similar to how an Instructor plans classes, each level is individually designed to match the energy of the music and the goal of the workout. Beats, breakers and streams are arranged in rhythm across six lanes and modeled off of different workout templates. Insights from our instructors were supplemented by analyses which mapped our cadence and resistance to different types of workouts and lengths, as well as performance data from Members.

Future of Fitness

The Peloton experience has been inspired by gaming since the very beginning. From the real time Leaderboard that lets you compete with others, to the detailed stats that show your progression over time, we have always used gaming elements to push Members to work out consistently and keep coming back for more.

With Lanebreak, we take this a step further, offering members an interactive experience that challenges them and rewards them in real time for their actions. We are particularly excited about this as it exposes an audience who may not be as comfortable or familiar with gaming-inspired experiences, to how powerful it can be as a motivator.

We are still early in our journey. Over the coming months, Members can expect to see new mechanics and challenges introduced to Lanebreak. We’re also actively exploring new platforms and formats. As with everything we do, we look to Members for inspiration and insights, and cannot wait to hear what the community has to say.
