Peloton Tread+ Recall: Frequently Asked Questions

UPDATED JANUARY 2024: For the latest Peloton Tread+ safety information, see here.
The Peloton Tread+
Why is Peloton recalling the Tread+?
Peloton, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, is recalling the Tread+ because we received reports that adult users, children, pets, and objects have been pulled underneath the Treadmill, posing a risk of injury or death. Everyone at Peloton cares deeply about your health and wellness, including your safety. We feel that this is the right thing to do.
How do I know if I have a Tread+?
This recall involves the Peloton Tread+. It has a 32-inch high definition (HD) touchscreen console and 67-inch deck running space. The treadmill was launched as the Peloton Tread in 2018 but renamed Tread+ in September 2020. The Tread + model number TR01 is printed on a black sticker located on the end cap in the front of the treadmill deck. The Tread+ has a touchscreen console and are black with the Peloton logo on the monitor and the side rails.
How is the Tread+ different than the Tread?
The Tread+ is different than the Peloton Tread, which is model number TR02. The Tread has a running deck space of 59 inches, a 23.8-inch high definition (HD) touchscreen console, and a non-slatted running belt with a red line down the middle. The Peloton Tread was also recalled by the CPSC because the touchscreen console on that treadmill can detach and fall, posing a risk of injury to consumers.
The Tread+ was sold only in the U.S. and the Tread was sold primarily in the UK and Canada, with a limited distribution of 1,000 units in the U.S.

What should I do if I have a Tread+?
After determining you have a Tread+, you should stop using it and review the options available set forth below and contact Peloton:
Refund: If you wish to return your Tread+ for a full refund, you may do so until November 6, 2022. After that date, we will permit returns for a partial, pro-rated refund.
or
Relocate: Upon request, we will also offer a free service visit to your home to relocate the Tread+ to another appropriate space that you designate in your home where children and pets cannot access it during use.
Software Updates: Regardless of whether you choose to Return the Product for a Refund or Request that it Be moved to another room, we are installing software updates on all Tread+ units that will automatically lock the Tread+ after each use. In addition, to prevent unauthorized access, the owner of the Tread+ must create a 4-digit passcode that will be required to unlock the Tread+. This unique passcode should not be shared with anyone who should not use the Tread+, including persons under the age of 16 or others who cannot safely operate the Tread+.
How many incidents/injuries/fatalities have occurred on the Tread+?
There are more than 70 reports of incidents where an adult user, child, pet or object was pulled under the Tread+, including tragically one report involving the fatality of a child and approximately 29 reports of injuries to children that resulted in serious abrasions, broken bones, and lacerations.
I’m a Tread+ Member and had an incident with the product I never reported to the company. What should I do?
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We want to learn more about your experience. Please email us at support@onepeloton.com or call Member Support. Once you have reached out, someone from our team will give you a call back to gather additional details about what happened. Please note that as part of our ongoing cooperation with the CPSC, we may be legally required to disclose your contact information to the agency to assist with their monitoring of this recall.
Can I continue to use the Tread+?
No. As our joint press release with the CPSC states, we strongly recommend that you immediately stop using the Tread+.
If you choose not to follow our joint recommendation to stop using the Tread+, it is critically important to remember to always be aware of your surroundings while using exercise equipment and to keep children, pets, and objects away from the Tread+ at all times. Please note that serious injuries or death can still occur if a child, pet, or object contacts the back of the treadmill while it is in use. Always use the safety key at all times during a workout. When your workout is complete, always make sure that the Tread+ is locked before you walk away and always store the safety key away from the device and out of the reach of children.
Please note that we are rolling out a required software update that will automatically lock the Tread+ after each use to prevent unauthorized access. In addition, the owner of the Tread+ must create a unique passcode and that passcode should not be shared with anyone who should not use the Tread+, including persons under the age of 16 or others who cannot safely operate the Tread+.
Will Peloton make any modifications to the Tread+ for future sales?
We are working to develop additional modifications to the recalled Tread+ that will address the hazard of adult users, children and pets being pulled below the Treadmill and suffering serious injury or death. These modifications will be incorporated presented to the CPSC and if approved, will be introduced into the product before Peloton resumes sales. We do not have any additional information about the modifications or any proposed timeline right now.
